The theory was first proposed in 1929 by the Hungarian author Karinthy Frigyes in a short story called Chains. The hypothesis is based on the indisputable fact that the number of acquaintances grows exponentially with the number of links in the chain, and so just a small number of links is required for the pair of acquaintances to become the entire adult population.

It gained credence after the 1967 small world research by social psychologist Stanley Milgram which suggested that two arbitrary US residents were indeed linked on average by a series of six friends. Milgram also recognized a 'funnelling' effect where all of the connecting had been done by way of a very small quantity of 'stars' with dramatically higher-than-average connection.
